The General Message of the Lecture

Pope Shenouda III addresses the issue of nervous fatigue from a comprehensive spiritual and human perspective, explaining that nervous exhaustion is not always a sin, but often has physical, psychological, social, and spiritual causes. He calls for inner calm, respect for others’ comfort, and living in the spirit of peace.

First: Physical Causes

  • Nervous fatigue may result from purely organic causes, such as nerve pressure, dental pain, or physical illness.
  • Not every nervous condition is a sign of sin; sometimes it is simply bodily weakness.
  • Severe exhaustion and lack of rest are among the main causes of nervous tension.

Second: Psychological and Social Causes

  • Noise, disturbance, and loud sounds greatly exhaust the nerves.
  • Exhausting communication styles such as pressure, repetition, and useless arguments drain the soul and others.
  • Negativity, exaggerating problems, fear, illusions, and repeated failure lead to nervous fatigue.
  • Wounding dignity, insults, and embarrassing others are among the strongest causes of nervous breakdown.
  • Interfering in people’s private matters and pressuring them to reveal secrets causes severe nervous strain.
  • Pressures of all kinds: family pressure, work pressure, domination, and imposing opinions.

Third: Causes Related to Temperament and Behavior

  • Differences in temperament: fiery, calm, or dull personalities.
  • Stubbornness, obstinacy, and constant argumentation exhaust the nerves.
  • Lying, deception, hypocrisy, and lack of integrity create anxiety and tension.
  • Associating with disturbed individuals may transmit their anxiety to others.

Fourth: Daily Life Factors

  • Certain stimulating and spicy foods exhaust the nerves and may raise blood pressure.
  • Colors and loud music negatively affect the nervous state.
  • Not respecting rest times or disturbing others in their homes or occasions causes general nervous fatigue.

Fifth: Spiritual Remedy

  • External calm is important, but inner calm is more important.
  • Inner peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
  • The more the heart is filled with love, joy, and peace, the less affected it is by external pressures.
  • Sound spirituality is the true protection against nervous fatigue.
