Can a Woman in the Diaspora Serve as a Member of the Church Board?
Question:
Can a woman in the diaspora serve as a member of the church board, that is, on the Board of Deacons?
Answer:
We have absolutely no objection to this, nor is there anything in the Church’s laws that prohibits it. The church board deals with administrative and financial matters, and women are fully capable of serving in such areas.
The only ministry from which women are excluded is the priesthood.
Since serving on the church board is not a priestly function, a woman may serve in this capacity.
In fact, women are currently members of some church boards in the diaspora. For example, there are two women serving on the board of our church in Rhode Island, and one woman serving on the board of the church in Minneapolis.
