🌟 General Introduction

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reflects on the characters of the Nativity, showing that God chose people of all types and ages, for Christ came for everyone — old and young, men and women, rich and poor, Jews and Gentiles, even creation itself.

👵👶 Diversity Around the Birth

Among those present were Simeon the Elder, very old in age, and John the Baptist as an unborn child.
Women like the Virgin Mary, Elizabeth, and Anna the Prophetess, and men like Joseph the Carpenter, King Herod, the scribes and Pharisees, the humble shepherds, and the wise Magi.
Even nature participated — the star guided the Magi, animals were in the manger, angels announced the birth, and dreams were divine means of guidance.

🕊️ The Work of the Holy Spirit and Angels

The Pope explains that the first divine action in the story was the work of the Holy Spirit, who sanctified Mary’s womb, filled Elizabeth and Zechariah, and led Simeon.
Also, angels worked powerfully, appearing to Zachariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the Magi — all signs of reconciliation between God and humanity after a long silence.

😈 The Conflict Between Light and Darkness

At the same time, Satan tried to destroy God’s plan by stirring Herod to kill the infants, but God saved Jesus and all involved.
The Pope stresses that God’s work always triumphs — every divine act is opposed by evil but ends in victory.

🌅 Christ’s Birth – The Beginning of Salvation

The birth of Christ marked the beginning of salvation. The angel said: “Today is born to you a Savior.”
Salvation was completed on the Cross, but its journey began in Bethlehem.
Like Simeon, we can say: “My eyes have seen Your salvation” — faith sees the promise even before its fulfillment.

🕊️ Man’s Role in His Own Salvation

His Holiness calls each believer to cooperate with grace, for Christ came to save all, but we must also desire salvation.
“Do not resist the Spirit,” he says, “but work with God for your own salvation.”

🐑 The Shepherds and the Magi

The shepherds symbolize humility and sincerity; they were chosen because their hearts were simple.
The Magi, representing the Gentiles, followed the star in faith, offered gifts, and returned as witnesses.
Both groups remind us that God reveals Himself to those who seek Him sincerely.

👑 The Mystery of Humility

The Nativity is a lesson in divine humility:

  • Christ, the King of Glory, was born in a manger.

  • The Virgin accepted divine honor with silence and humility.

  • Joseph obeyed despite confusion.

  • The humble stable became a holy shrine for kings.
Thus, God exalts the humble and dwells among them.

🌿 True Greatness

Finally, the Pope reminds us that holiness sanctifies the place, not the other way around.
The manger became glorious because Christ lay there.
The message of the Nativity is clear: God works quietly, through humility and purity — and the humble path is the road to true glory.
