In this lecture His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reflects on the characters of the Nativity story and their spiritual and practical place. He focuses on that the Nativity story gathered all social layers — from elders and women and shepherds and magi and kings — to show that Christ came for everyone. He highlights the work of the Holy Spirit and the angels as the beginning of the work of salvation, and the resistance of Satan and human agitation that the birth of Christ faced.

Spiritual and educational dimension (from a Coptic Orthodox perspective)

The lecture presents the meaning of the Incarnation as the beginning of the salvation story: the birth is the first step in God’s plan of salvation that is completed on the cross. It emphasizes the presence of the Holy Spirit in the events (His descent on the Virgin, Elizabeth, Zechariah, and Simeon) and the role of spiritual fathers as bearers of the good news. The lecture also affirms the humility of Christ and the Virgin and the necessity of the human response to God’s work by participation and not opposition.

Practical points for spiritual application

  • The Nativity is a call to personal participation in the salvation of the soul: God’s work does not prevail unless we respond.

  • Humility is a central virtue: whoever humbles himself is exalted, as shown in the birth of God in a lowly place.

  • Spiritual vigilance and readiness: signs and manifestations from the Spirit and angels indicate the nearness of God’s work.

  • Resisting spiritual wars: every divine work will face the devil’s envy and the world’s conspiracies, but God ultimately succeeds.

Brief conclusion

The lecture urges the faithful to contemplate the greatness of the mystery of the Incarnation and to embrace salvation, with encouragement to pray, act, and persevere so that a person is not an obstacle before the work of the Holy Spirit. The story teaches us that God prepares the time with wisdom and that humility and response are the way to share in the grace of salvation.
