Biblical Terms – Water

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reflects on the symbolism of water in the Holy Bible, explaining that water is not merely physical but has a deep spiritual meaning—representing new life, purification, and the Holy Spirit Himself.

🔹 Theological and Spiritual Meaning:

The Pope begins with the physical water that quenches human thirst, then explains another kind of water: spiritual water, mentioned by the Lord Jesus in His conversation with the Samaritan woman:
“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.”
This is the living water that refreshes the soul, not the body.

He refers to Revelation, where a pure river of water of life flows from the throne of God—showing that this is not material water, since those in eternity have no physical bodies. It symbolizes divine life flowing from God Himself.

He also cites Jeremiah 2, where God says:
“They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns that can hold no water.”
This reveals that God Himself is the fountain of true life, and anyone apart from Him remains spiritually empty.

The Pope explains that water in the Bible symbolizes:

  • Life, as the essence of existence and growth.

  • Purification and cleansing, symbolizing the forgiveness of sins.

  • The Holy Spirit, as in John 7:38—
“He who believes in Me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
The Gospel itself clarifies that this “water” means the Holy Spirit given to believers.

🔹 Spiritual Dimension:

His Holiness teaches that the Holy Spirit is the living water that quenches the soul’s thirst and grants eternal life. True thirst is not of the body but of the spirit—for only Christ can satisfy the inner longing for God.
