A New Heart and a New Spirit

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the beginning of the New Year as a real opportunity for a new beginning with God, rather than merely moving from one calendar year to another.
A true new beginning means that God gives a person a new heart and a new spirit, as stated in the Lord’s promise in the Book of Ezekiel.
A repentant person does not remain as he was, but his heart, thoughts, desires, way of life, and dealings with others are changed.
He emphasizes that true change is not merely external improvement or the practice of certain spiritual activities, but an inner renewal that includes the heart, mind, will, and the whole life.
Spiritual Message
The Pope explains that the new heart is a divine gift given by God to the repentant person, and that the Holy Spirit works within the person and gives him the strength and grace to walk in God’s way.
He points out that a person cannot live a new life by human strength alone; therefore, he must persistently ask God to grant him the new heart and the new spirit.
