A life of triumph and victory
The lecture, as presented by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, teaches that the true spiritual life is a life of continuous victory. He explains that victory is not over others, but over oneself, tribulations, obstacles, sin, and the devil. This victory brings joy in heaven, purity of heart, and affirms one’s sonship to God.
🔹 The Concept of Spiritual Victory
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III affirms that the spiritual person is always victorious, for the Church in its essence is a striving Church on earth and a triumphant one in heaven. Victory is not defeating others but winning them through love, for true triumph is internal, not confrontational.
🔹 Victory Over Tribulations and Obstacles
The pope calls for steadfastness and not allowing tribulations to shake the inner person. The true believer overcomes hardship with patience, faith, and correct understanding. Likewise, he overcomes the obstacles on his way to God, as a wise person solves puzzles—because obstacles are spiritual training.
🔹 Victory Over Sin and the Devil
He teaches that real victory begins inside: over thoughts, desires, and weaknesses. He gives examples like Joseph the Righteous, the martyrs, and the saints. He stresses resisting the tricks of the evil one with firm faith, and that the devil fears the victorious person.
🔹 Victory Over the Self
The pope emphasizes that the strongest type of victory is victory over oneself, desires, and inner weakness. Whoever conquers his inner world conquers everything outward. He cites fathers like Augustine and St. John Chrysostom.
🔹 Fruits of Victory
This inner victory fills the heart with peace, gives firmness before threats, makes one a model for others, and becomes a source of joy in heaven. It also appears at the hour of death, where the victorious person is peaceful and joyful in departing to Christ.
🔹 Means of Spiritual Victory
The pope stresses the absolute necessity of spiritual striving: prayer, Scripture reading, confession, communion, self-examination, and all means of grace. Without this striving, a person weakens and becomes an easy prey. But with the word of God, faith, and hope, he receives the power of victory.
🔹 Heavenly Reward
He quotes the promises in the Book of Revelation: whoever overcomes will eat from the Tree of Life, wear white garments, receive a new name, and sit with Christ on His throne. These promises reveal the glory of the victorious in eternity.
