God’s Care for the Little Things

Main Idea
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about God, who cares for little ones and for small and simple things, giving them great value. He explains that God does not look at outward appearances or human abilities, but looks at the heart. Many people feel insignificant when they compare their spiritual lives with those of the saints and wonder whether God can accept their simple lives. However, God is the God of everyone, and He cares for every person, no matter how small or weak they may be.
Spiritual Message
- God chose people who were young and weak and made them great in His service, such as David, Joseph, and Jeremiah, as well as Saints Mark, Athanasius, and Bishoy.
- God cares for even the smallest offerings. He blessed the five loaves and two fish and fed five thousand men with them. He also used Gideon’s three hundred men to achieve victory.
- God demonstrates His care for every soul through the parables of the lost coin and the lost sheep, confirming that none of His children is forgotten before Him.
- God accepts simple spiritual acts, such as giving a cup of cold water, shedding a tear of repentance, or offering a short and sincere prayer, and gives them great value.
- God rejoices in sincere repentance, as demonstrated by His acceptance of the tax collector and the thief on the right, despite the few deeds they were able to offer.
- God does not despise the weak or those who are beginners in spiritual life. Rather, He cares for them and gives them a place, because His standards are different from those of the world.
- God used small and varied things to accomplish His purposes, such as the worm, the wind, and the fish in the story of Jonah. He also chose people whom the world would not have expected Him to use.
Educational Lesson
Pope Shenouda teaches that a person’s value does not depend on age, status, talents, or abilities, but on their willingness to allow God to work within them. A person should never despise themselves or despair of their spiritual life because of limited abilities, since God can make little things great, the weak strong, and the small significant.
He also explains that God’s standards differ from human standards. God does not expect the servant who received two talents to produce five, but asks each person to be faithful with what they have received. Therefore, He says: “You have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many things.”
Practical Application
- Do not compare your spiritual life with that of the saints in a way that leads you to despair. Instead, strive to offer what you can.
- Never despise any small act of love, service, or prayer, because God forgets nothing.
- Be faithful with the little that has been entrusted to you, and do not become lazy or careless under the excuse of having limited abilities.
- Do not despise those who are weak or beginners in spiritual life; encourage them and care for them.
- Offer God whatever you can, even if it is a short prayer or a simple effort, and ask Him to bless and increase it.
- Trust that God is able to work within you and through you, and that He never forgets any good deed, no matter how small it may seem.
