Following the Life of the Prophet David, Part 2

This reflection discusses the life of David the Prophet, explaining that a person’s success may become a cause of envy and persecution from others, as happened to David when King Saul saw his success and the people’s love for him. Pope Shenouda III explains that tribulations may sometimes come as a result of our personal mistakes, while at other times they may come because of the envy of others and their opposition to goodness. Saul’s envy of David gradually turned into resentment and hatred, followed by repeated attempts to kill him, even though David had done him no harm. On the other hand, David remained committed to humility and gentleness and did not allow the success and glory surrounding him to make him proud.
Spiritual Message
David’s life confirms that a person who walks with God needs prayer and patience, especially when facing injustice because of success or faithfulness. David chose to leave his affairs in God’s hands and did not take advantage of the opportunities he had to take revenge on Saul; instead, he continued to respect him as the Lord’s anointed. His life demonstrates that nobility, humility, and forgiveness can affect hardened hearts more than violence and resistance. God may also allow tribulations to train His children in endurance and patience and prepare them for the responsibilities they will carry in the future.
Educational Lesson
The comparison between David and Saul shows that the real difference does not lie in never falling into sin, but in the nature of the heart and a person’s attitude toward sin and repentance. David sometimes fell, but he was able to repent and rise again, whereas Saul continued in envy, hatred, and stubbornness, and his moments of emotional response did not develop into lasting change in his life. The example of Jonathan and Michal teaches us that obedience to God comes before obedience to people when their commands conflict with God’s commandments, while maintaining the respect owed to parents. This reflection also warns us that concern for personal status and honor may lead a person away from God and cause the loss of the love of those closest to him.
Practical Application
This reflection invites us to examine our hearts when we feel jealousy or envy toward the success of others, so that these feelings do not turn into hatred or harmful actions. We should remain humble regardless of how much success we achieve and face injustice with patience and prayer instead of revenge. We also learn not to justify our mistakes or deceive our consciences, but to examine ourselves honestly and repent when we sin. We must leave judgment to God, treat others with compassion and respect, and trust that God sees what we endure and helps us at the appropriate time.
