Main Idea

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III discusses the importance of perseverance in prayer in the life of a Christian, through a reflection on the commandment of Saint Paul the Apostle: “Fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, persevering in prayer.” He explains that true prayer begins within, with spiritual fervor and love for God, and is not merely the repetition of words or the performance of a formal duty. Prayer is the connection that links a person to God, and it is an expression of love and the desire to remain continually in His presence. As a person’s love for God grows, their desire to pray and continue in prayer also increases.

Spiritual Message

This teaching emphasizes that prayer is not merely a means of asking for needs, but a relationship of love and communion with God, in which a person needs His presence, care, and companionship. A humble person who recognizes their weakness and need for God finds refuge, strength, and divine help in prayer. Pride, self-reliance, and preoccupation with the love of the world may weaken a person’s desire to pray and make them feel that they do not need God. The Pope explains that tribulations and problems may lead a person to pray and return to God, although the highest spiritual relationship is one in which a person prays out of love, even when they have no specific requests.

Educational Lesson

The Pope explains that true repentance requires God’s help because a person cannot rely on human strength alone to overcome sin, sinful habits, and passions. Prayer is the door to repentance, as a person places themselves before God, seeking forgiveness, freedom from the love of sin, and victory over the causes of falling into sin. Perseverance in prayer also does not mean praying only at specific times, but keeping the heart connected to God in the various situations of life. He emphasizes that a spiritual person lifts their heart to God while working, speaking, eating, and walking, seeks His help in every action, and also prays for others, the Church, servants, the sick, students, and all those in need.

Practical Application

The Pope calls for developing a love of prayer through spiritual readings, hymns, and meditation on holy things that bring the heart closer to God. He advises people to begin their day with prayer and end it with prayer, while continuing to speak with God throughout the day, seeking His guidance, protection, and help in avoiding sin and controlling speech and anger. He also encourages praying for people instead of judging them or becoming preoccupied with criticizing them, as well as thanking God for His blessings and asking Him to bless everyone around us. The goal is for prayer to become a constant part of life, arising from a humble heart that recognizes its continual need for God and seeks His love and help at every step.
