Main Idea

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III discusses the person of John the Baptist, explaining his greatness and unique place in the history of salvation. He emphasizes that the Lord Jesus testified that John was the greatest among those born of women, and that John was prepared by God from the time he was in his mother’s womb to carry out a great mission.

Spiritual Message

John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit from the time he was in his mother’s womb, and this appeared clearly in his encounter with the Virgin Mary and the child in her womb. The Pope explains that John’s strength was not human strength, but the fruit of the work of the Holy Spirit in him and his complete readiness for God’s mission. He also lived a life of the wilderness, solitude, prayer, and contemplation until he became spiritually strong, pure, and courageous in proclaiming the truth.

Educational Lesson

The Pope explains that John combined a life of solitude with a life of service; he spent many years in the wilderness and then went out to preach, teach the people, and call them to repentance. This shows that true solitude is not an escape from society or an inability to deal with it, but can be the fruit of love for God and preparation for service. He also highlights the meaning of being “great before the Lord”: true greatness is not based on self-admiration or the appreciation of people, but on humility before God and the manifestation of God’s work in a person.

Practical Application

The example of John the Baptist calls us to a life of seriousness with God, purity, prayer, repentance, and bearing witness to the truth without fear. John was ready to endure suffering, imprisonment, and death for the sake of his faithfulness to the truth, and he did not allow fear of people to prevent him from fulfilling his mission. His greatness also appears in the fact that he hid himself so that Christ might appear, making the purpose of his ministry to prepare the way before the Lord rather than to glorify himself. Therefore, we learn from him that a person can influence others when he is first filled with God, lives in humility, and places his spiritual mission above his personal interests.
