Question
If a person commits a sin, can he atone for it through a good deed or an act of mercy?
Answer
The Scripture says: “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). There is no deliverance from this judgment except through Christ’s death for us. He is the only atonement for our sins, “and there is salvation in no one else.” No one is entitled to Christ’s blood except through faith and repentance.
Good deeds do not take away sins; rather, one sin can destroy a person, no matter how many other good deeds he may have.
As for an act of mercy, it moves the heart of God, who said: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” But an act of mercy without repentance and without faith cannot save anyone. Yet because of mercy, grace visits the heart of man and calls him to repentance. If he repents, he becomes worthy of the blood, and his sins are forgiven.
