His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reflects on the Parable of the Sower, explaining that the sower is our Lord Jesus Christ and that the seed is the Word of God, which the Lord plants in the hearts of all people.
He emphasizes that God does not deprive anyone of His grace, but casts His seed into every heart, even when it is hard, shallow, or filled with thorns.
The path represents the heart that does not retain the Word of God because of many distractions and thoughts, so the seed is quickly taken away and bears no fruit.

Spiritual Message

The Pope emphasizes the need to hold on to the Word of God and not allow the things around us to take away what grace has planted in the heart. Therefore, a person needs quietness, solitude, and meditation on what he has heard or read so that the Word may become firmly established within him.
The rocky ground represents a superficial life that receives the Word of God with joy, but does not allow it to enter deeply; therefore, it withers when it encounters hardship or trial.
Nevertheless, the Pope emphasizes that God is able to change the rocky ground and transform it into good soil, and that a person should not lose hope in God’s work within him.

Educational Lesson

The ground filled with thorns represents the person who receives the Word of God and allows it to work within him, but the cares of the world and the concerns of life overwhelm it until they choke it.
Therefore, a person should search for the things that choke the work of God’s Word in his heart and move away from the cycles of life and distractions that scatter his mind and spirit.
The Pope explains that the good soil is the heart that keeps the Word, meditates upon it, and turns it into life and action, rather than merely being someone who hears the Word or understands it intellectually.

Practical Application

Grace is one, but its fruit differs according to a person’s response, inner work, and acceptance of God’s seed in his heart.
The Pope gives the example of the Virgin Mary, who heard the words, meditated upon them, and kept them in her heart, demonstrating the meaning of true inner work.
The final call is for us to prepare our hearts for God as good soil, so that we may hear His Word, keep it, meditate upon it, and act upon it until it produces a fruitful life.
