Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh

Pope Shenouda III reflects on the gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—and explains that their spiritual meaning applies not only to Christ but also to every believer. We should not think of these gifts merely as external offerings; rather, our own lives should become gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Gold: A Precious and Pure Soul

Gold symbolizes preciousness and purity. The most valuable thing a person can offer God is their own soul and heart. A person who understands how precious the soul is before God will guard it and offer it to Him in purity, like refined gold.

Frankincense: Prayer and Worship

Frankincense symbolizes prayer, worship, and priestly offering. Just as incense rises upward, the believer’s prayers and worship should rise before God. A life offered to God becomes a living sacrifice: purity represents the gold, while worship and prayer represent the frankincense.

Myrrh: Suffering That Becomes a Sweet Fragrance

Myrrh has a double significance: it represents suffering, yet it is also a fragrance. Suffering endured for God’s sake may be bitter to experience, but it can become spiritually fragrant before Him. Myrrh therefore points to the Cross and to accepting the hardships that accompany faithful Christian life.

The Three Gifts in the Christian Life

A complete spiritual life combines all three: purity and spiritual worth like gold, prayer and worship like frankincense, and the acceptance of suffering and the Cross like myrrh. Pope Shenouda uses biblical figures such as Abraham to illustrate how these three elements can exist together in a life devoted to God.

Their Fulfillment in Christ Crucified

The fullest image of these three gifts is found in Christ on the Cross. He is the King represented by gold; He is the Priest who offered Himself as a sacrifice, represented by frankincense; and He endured suffering for humanity, represented by myrrh. Thus, the Christian is called to share in the life of Christ and the Cross.

Conclusion: The believer should not only ask, “What did the Magi offer Christ?” but also, “What am I offering God?” The greatest offering is one’s own life: a soul pure as gold, a life of prayer like frankincense, and a willingness to bear the Cross faithfully like myrrh.
