His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the danger of anger, insult, and cursing, explaining that the commandment “Do not kill” is not limited only to physical killing, but also extends to hurting others through speech, insult, and inner anger. A hurtful word may be a kind of moral killing and carries a great sin before God.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the meaning of the word “Raca” as a word of contempt or simple insult, while the phrase “You fool” carries a stronger insult and humiliation of the person himself. He confirms that when a person insults his brother because of his appearance, mind, or abilities, he is insulting the creation of God itself, because God is the Creator of this person.

He also confirms that cursing reveals the impurity of the heart and tongue, because “out of the abundance of the heart the tongue speaks.” Therefore, harsh and insulting words express weakness of love, hardness of heart, and lack of respect for others.

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III also discusses the danger of judgment, gossip, and slander, explaining that a person may wound others not only through direct speech, but also through thoughts, speaking about them in their absence, or attaching permanent condemning descriptions to their personalities.

He also explains the importance of repentance and reconciliation before offering worship or sacrifice to God, quoting the words of the Lord Christ: “Go first and be reconciled with your brother.” God does not seek sacrifice or prayer as much as He seeks a pure, reconciled, and loving heart.

He also confirms that holy places, prayers, and spiritual times may awaken a person’s conscience and make him remember his sins and mistakes toward others, leading him to repentance, correction, and restoring what was wrong.

Spiritual Message

The main message of the lecture is that purity of heart and true love appear in speech and behavior, and that a person must guard his tongue and thoughts from judgment, insult, and cursing, because God seeks a pure and reconciled heart more than outward rituals.

Faith Dimension

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III focuses on:
