The Sermon on the Mount – Enter through the narrow gate, Part 1

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

The lecture by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the true spiritual path that leads to eternal life, which is the “narrow gate” recommended by the Lord Christ. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that Satan makes the path of sin wide, easy, and full of temptations, while God’s path appears narrow because it is based on truth, commandment, and purity.

The Narrow Path and the Path of the World

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III points out that the world offers easy solutions based on lying, deception, or giving up principles, but these paths ultimately lead to destruction. As for the path of Christ, it is the path of values, truthfulness, and endurance, and although it is difficult at the beginning, it leads to true glory.

Self-Denial and Detachment

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the first step of the narrow gate is self-denial and not clinging to personal dignity, rights, or the love of money. He also explains that detachment, giving, and sacrifice for God may appear difficult, but they grant a person grace, joy, and inner peace.

Overcoming the Body and Self-Control

The lecture confirms that spiritual life requires struggle and self-control, whether in food, speech, thoughts, or desires. Therefore, the Church gave fasting as a spiritual means to strengthen the will and control the body, so that a person would not become enslaved to desires and passions.

Controlling Thoughts and the Tongue

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes the importance of controlling thoughts and the tongue, because a person may perish because of an uncontrolled word or thought. The narrow path means that a person watches over his thoughts, feelings, and speech, and asks God to preserve his mouth and heart in purity.

Endurance and Humility

The lecture explains that endurance and humility are among the most important marks of the narrow gate. The true Christian person endures insults, discipline, and trials without complaining, and accepts advice and rebuke with a humble spirit, following the example of the Lord Christ, the saints, and the martyrs.

Service Labor and Purity

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the labor of service and preaching, and enduring spiritual wars as part of the narrow path. He also presents the example of Joseph the Righteous, who rejected sin and chose purity despite distress and injustice, and the result was glory and exaltation from God.

The Spiritual Message

The main message of the lecture is that the narrow path may be difficult at its beginning, but it leads to spiritual expansion and eternal glory. As for the wide path that appears comfortable at first, it ends in distress and slavery to sin. Therefore, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III calls every person to hold firmly to principles, values, and commandments مهما The difficulties were, because this is the path that leads to the Kingdom.
