Love is the Greatest Virtue

The Main Idea
The lecture confirms that love is the greatest virtue in the Christian life, and it is the essence of the relationship with God, because God Himself is love. The presence of love in the human heart is evidence of God dwelling in it, and its absence means the heart is empty of the divine presence مهما كثرت الفضائل الأخرى.
Love Above All Virtues
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that love surpasses faith and hope, and even surpasses knowledge, prophecy, and visible works. Without love, all virtues become without value, because love is what gives them their true spirit and meaning.
Love as the Foundation of Spiritual Life
Spiritual life begins with the fear of God and ends with the love of God. Love is the summit of the spiritual path, and it is the true relationship that connects الإنسان بالله، not merely obedience or execution of commandments.
Love as a Divine Commandment
Love is the greatest commandment, summarizing the whole law in loving God and loving the neighbor. It is a new commandment in its depth because it is based on بذل وتضحية, as Christ loved humanity even unto the cross.
Love as Giving and Sacrifice
True love gives and does not take, and sacrifices itself for others. It differs from lust which seeks to take. Therefore, every giving without love is not accepted, because true giving is an expression of a loving heart.
Love in Worship and Service
Prayer and service without love lose their value. Prayer is an expression of love and longing for God, and service is an act of love, not مجرد واجب or activity. Love enters into every virtue and gives it meaning.
Love in the Example of Christ
Christ is the perfect example of love, as He lived loving all without exception, and offered Himself as a sacrifice of love for humanity. All His works and miracles came from a loving heart.
God’s Love for Humanity
God loved الإنسان before creating him, and created everything for his sake. His love is unconditional and not based on human worthiness, but is a ثابتة divine nature that calls man to love likewise.
Personal Call
The lecture ends with a call to examine oneself: Do we truly love God? And are all our works stemming from love? The true measure of spiritual life is the scale of love.
