The General Message of the Lecture

The lecture focuses on the Fast of Nineveh as a deep fast of repentance, revealing God’s long-suffering heart and His continuous pursuit of human salvation, regardless of stubbornness or sin. Through the story of the Prophet Jonah, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that God does not delight in the destruction of the sinner, but in his repentance and life, and that true fasting cannot be separated from practical repentance and a change of way.

First: The Fast of Nineveh as a Preparation for the Great Lent

The Fast of Nineveh is placed before the Great Lent as a spiritual training in repentance, sharing the same fasting discipline and abstinence, preparing believers to enter the depth of the holy fast. It is not merely abstaining from food, but a call to return to God.

Second: The Story of Jonah and the Revelation of the Human Heart

The story of Jonah reveals human stubbornness and attachment to personal opinion and dignity, even in a prophet. Jonah fled from God and slept while disobedient, while the pagans on the ship prayed and repented. The story shows that a prophet is not infallible, and that God uses even human weakness to accomplish the salvation of others.

Third: The Obedience of Creation and the Disobedience of Man

The wind, the waves, the fish, the worm, and the sun all obeyed God’s command, while man alone resisted with his mind and will. The problem is not human weakness, but pride and hardness of heart.

Fourth: Repentance Changes Man, Not God

God does not change, but man does. Sinful Nineveh deserved destruction, while repentant Nineveh deserved mercy. Just as a mirror reflects the face before it, God’s judgment is revealed according to the state of the human heart.

Fifth: Acceptable Fasting Is Fasting with Repentance

The Fast of Nineveh teaches that fasting without repentance does not save. God saw their deeds, that they turned from their evil way, not merely their fasting or wearing sackcloth. Therefore, acceptable fasting is the one that leads to a change in behavior and heart.

Sixth: God Never Despairs of Anyone’s Salvation

God pursued the people of the ship, the people of Nineveh, and Jonah himself. He used different methods with each, yet His goal was the salvation of all. This is a clear proclamation of God’s universal love and long-suffering.

Spiritual Conclusion

The Fast of Nineveh is the fast of repentance, heartfelt prayer, and practical return to God. It is a call to fast and repent together, so that we may receive mercy and blessing and enter the Great Lent with pure and prepared hearts.
