Terms in the Holy Bible – Water

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the word water in the Holy Bible carries two main meanings and one must distinguish between them: the material water and the spiritual water.
💧 First: Material Water
Material water is the sensible water that a person drinks when thirsty, and the text uses it for tangible life examples.
🌊 Second: Spiritual Water (Living Water)
Spiritual water is the life of the spirit and the spring of eternal life, and this is what Christ meant when He spoke to the Samaritan woman: the water that I give is a spring of living water that quenches the spirit and the person will never thirst again.
🔥 Water and the Holy Spirit
Scripture sometimes links water with the Holy Spirit; Christ said that whoever believes out of his belly will flow rivers of living water, and tradition interprets this as a symbol of granting the Holy Spirit to believers.
🌿 Water as a Symbol of Life and Cleansing
Water in Scripture is a symbol of life, of cleansing and washing (equated with baptism), and it points to spiritual renewal and purification of the heart from sin.
🕊 Biblical Visions of Living Water
In Revelation John sees a river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God, and in Jeremiah God declares Himself the spring of living waters; the meaning here is not material but heavenly and spiritual.
🌟 Spiritual Conclusion
The believer is called to distinguish between sensible water and spiritual water and to seek the living water which is the Holy Spirit, by which the soul attains eternal life and purity.
