📌 The General Meaning of the Word “Body”

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the word body in the Holy Bible does not carry a single meaning, but appears in several different uses—some literal and some symbolic or spiritual—each understood according to its biblical context.

✨ First: The Material Body

  • It is the physical or animal body belonging to humans, animals, and birds, and it is well-known.

  • This body is the outer vessel in which we live in this world.

✨ Second: The Resurrection Body

  • The resurrection body is a spiritual, heavenly body, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15: 40–49.

  • It is a glorified body entirely different from the earthly one and fitting for eternal life.

✨ Third: The Body Meaning “the Whole Person”

  • Often the word body is used to refer to the entire human being, not just the physical part.

    • Example: “The Word became flesh,” meaning He became a full human being.

    • Christ’s words: “He gave Him authority over all flesh,” meaning all humanity.

    • And: “No flesh would be saved,” meaning no human being.

✨ Fourth: The Body as a Symbolic Meaning

  • The word body also comes in a symbolic, spiritual sense, such as describing the Church as the Body of Christ, and Christ as the Head.

  • This reveals the unity of believers with Christ and their union with Him in one body.

🌿 Spiritual Message

The multiple meanings of the word body help the believer gain a deeper understanding of biblical texts, distinguishing between the temporary earthly body, the glorified body of the resurrection, and the body as the community of believers united with Christ. It also calls the person to see his whole being—body, soul, and spirit—as a place where God works.
