In this lecture, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about meekness as a spiritual nature and a practical behavior in daily life, continuing his previous teaching. He emphasizes that meekness appears in how a person treats others, and in the calmness of his heart, speech, and actions. The meek person is not weak but strong through humility, self-control, and forgiveness.

🌿 Traits of the meek person

  • Good in dealing: Knows how to deal kindly with people, and others find ease in his presence.

  • Modest and gentle: The meek person is decent, gentle in nature, ashamed of sin, and careful not to offend God or others.

  • Compliant and peaceful: Does not insist on his own opinion or enter heated discussions but accepts dialogue calmly and wisely.

  • Free from stubbornness or resistance: He does not insist except on faith and doctrine, and even then, with quiet firmness and no conflict.

  • Loves constructive dialogue: Like Abraham and Moses and the prophets who spoke with God in humility and meekness.

🌾 Meekness in God Himself

The Pope explains that God is the perfect example of meekness, as He accepts discussion even from Satan, endures sinners and atheists, and gives everyone a chance for repentance. God is long-suffering, merciful, and does not deal with us according to our sins but remembers that we are dust.
Divine meekness is revealed in His patience and compassion, even toward those who deny Him.

🌸 Meekness in human relationships

The meek person lets things pass and does not create problems. He does not anger quickly, nor stir disputes, but preserves his inner peace.
Meekness brings tranquility and comfort to the home and society; the meek woman fills her home with peace, and the meek man governs with love and respect.
The meek does not hurt anyone, does not judge harshly, and forgives easily.

🌺 Practical expressions of meekness

  • Gentleness in words, looks, and behavior.

  • Simplicity of mind, without deceit or scheming.

  • Slowness to anger and quickness to forgive.

  • Humility in judging others, leaving judgment to God.

  • Constancy in peace and calmness.

🌼 Spiritual dimension and result

Meekness brings rest to the soul, as the Lord said: “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
It is a source of blessing, for the Lord also said: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Therefore, meekness is not a heavy commandment but a path of joy and inner peace in one’s relationship with God and others.
