Saint Anastasia
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the life of Saint Anastasia, portrayed as a saint who renounced every worldly glory for the Christian life.
🔹 Origin and Love of Monasticism
She was born into a noble family in the royal court during the time of Emperor Justinian; her father was one of the high officials of the palace. From her childhood she inclined to an ascetic life after hearing the lives of the monks, and fearing coercion from her parents she kept her desire secret.
🔹 Flight and Hiding
When the emperor desired to marry her, Anastasia fled to Alexandria then to a convent of the monasteries west of the city, then chose greater seclusion and moved to a desert cave at the request of Anba Daniel.
🔹 Life of Solitude and Asceticism
She lived in the cave a life of withdrawal and prayer for about thirty-eight years, hiding her origin and virginity, eating what was given to her and performing her ascetic practices in silence as if she belonged among the monks.
🔹 Hidden Service and Spiritual Trial
She behaved as a monk among the monks and was treated as a humble ascetic, deliberately concealing her virtues and humility to gain her reward in heaven.
🔹 Departure and the Revelation of the Secret
When Anba Daniel perceived the nearness of her repose he came and found that she had wrapped herself in her shroud; during the burial it became known that she was a woman, so he wrote her story and announced it to the Church.
🔹 Blessing and Commemoration
She reposed in the Lord on 26 Tobe, and her cave was filled with the fragrance of incense after her repose. Her story and blessing became an inspiration in the Church because she left the title of empress and the delights of the palace to live a life of asceticism.
🔹 The Coptic Orthodox Dimension
From the perspective of our Coptic Orthodox faith, the story highlights the value of consecration, asceticism, and humility, and that concealing virtues and renouncing worldly glory is a path to nearness to God and receiving heavenly reward.
🔹 Practical Message
The lecture calls believers to choose the spiritual life and avoid ostentatious humility, seeking heavenly reward, encouraging service to the poor and turning away from the seductions of empty glory.
