The lecture addresses the persecutions of our Syriac Orthodox brothers in the Church of Antioch, and reviews the life and struggle by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III (the speaker according to the file instructions) about Saint Severus the Antiochian and his role in preserving the Orthodox faith in face of attempts to unify doctrines with the Council of Chalcedon.

Historical context:

  • The lecture mentions that Saint Severus the Antiochian lived in the reign of Emperor Justinian and came to Egypt in the year 518 AD, and stayed there about twenty years until 538 AD.

  • The speaker explains how the miaphysite (one-nature) people were subjected to severe persecution by supporters of the two-natures and the empire’s desire to accept the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon, and how some fathers were forced to withdraw in order to preserve the Church.

  • It also mentions successive events of conflicts between the patriarchates of Antioch and Constantinople and the attempts of councils and imperial policies that affected the Church and the flocks.

Personality of Saint Severus and his works:

  • Saint Severus is presented as a steadfast orthodox hero, he wrote letters and solid works that uphold the faith, and he was sending them to strengthen his brethren in Antioch.

  • He is referenced as having works included in the collections of the Eastern Fathers, and to translations and letters that can be benefited from.

Spiritual and educational lessons:

  • Steadfastness in faith is better than yielding to political pressure or temptations, and sometimes it is permissible to withdraw from the political scene to preserve the Church’s welfare.

  • The importance of local councils and the fathers’ letters in establishing the people educationally and spiritually, and the need to preserve the fathers’ heritage and to compile their letters.

  • It is shown that the attempts at doctrinal reconciliation carried out through the centuries did not succeed in forcing the faithful to give up, and that the Church remained steadfast in its faith.

Conclusion:
The lecture calls to remember the martyrs and fathers of the Church like Saint Severus, to learn from their patience and steadfastness, and to preserve the fathers’ heritage of letters and sayings to safeguard the faith and teach it to generations.
