Strength in the Spiritual Life

The lecture speaks about a fundamental trait in the spiritual life: spiritual strength. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that a spiritual person must be strong, for he is created in the image of God who is almighty and without weakness. This strength is not physical or violent, but a spiritual power that comes from the Holy Spirit working within the believer.
Meaning of Spiritual Strength
Spiritual strength is a gift from God, not from man himself. The Lord Jesus said: “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,” meaning a strength that acts in the heart, mind, and will. This strength keeps the believer steadfast in faith, unshaken by trials, courageous in challenges, and full of inner peace.
Biblical Examples
The Pope presents examples of God’s strong servants, such as Moses, who was strong in faith and endurance despite his humility; David, who defeated Goliath in the name of the Lord; Elijah, who triumphed by God’s power over the prophets of Baal; and Saint Paul, who declared, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” emphasizing that true power comes only from God.
Strength in the Church and Spiritual Life
This strength appears in powerful prayer, fruitful ministry, the living word of God that transforms hearts, and in bearing sufferings with endurance. The Church herself is described as “awesome as an army with banners,” meaning strong in her faith and struggle. A strong believer lives a life of unshakable repentance, pressing forward in holiness.
Strength in Weakness
God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, because perfect strength is revealed in weakness. When a person feels weak, God grants him divine power so that He alone is glorified. True strength is not domination or pride but humility with firmness, gentleness with courage, patience with deep faith.
Spiritual Summary
A believer is called to be strong in God—strong in faith, love, service, and prayer—asking God always to fill him with the power of the Holy Spirit to build His Kingdom. The Kingdom of God is not built by weakness, but by the strength of divine grace working in His children.
