🟢 Introduction

  • The Bible gives us examples and models of men and women to learn from.

  • Adam and Eve are the first model in everything: the first man and woman, the first sin and punishment, and the first father and mother.

🟣 The Woman in Biblical Thought

  • She was created as a helper and counterpart to the man, equal in human nature and dignity, talents, and responsibility before God.

  • Yet, the man is declared the head of the woman (Genesis): “your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

  • Women tend to be more emotional, while men often lead in responsibility and direction.

🔹 Examples of Women in the Bible

🕊 Righteous / Positive Examples:

  1. Women who followed Jesus (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna) and supported him financially.

  2. The Shunammite woman, who built a small upper room for Elisha and was blessed with a son.

  3. Deborah the prophetess, a judge of Israel — a stronger figure than many men; the Spirit of God worked through her.

  4. Abigail, whose wise intervention prevented David from committing bloodshed.

  5. Rahab, who saved the spies and entered the line of Christ.

  6. Esther the queen, who saved her people from destruction.

  7. Barren women who were later blessed (Sarah, Samson’s mother, Hannah, Elizabeth) — lessons in patience and faith.

⚫ Wicked / Stumbling Examples:

  1. Jezebel: a powerful but wicked woman who led Ahab and the nation into idol worship; she met a tragic end.

  2. Delilah: who betrayed Samson and led to his downfall.

  3. Job’s wife: urged him to curse God, and he rebuked her.

  4. Michal, David’s wife: despised David’s worshipful dance and later bore no children.

  5. Solomon’s foreign wives: led his heart away from God despite his wisdom.

  6. Potiphar’s wife: attempted to seduce Joseph; he resisted and triumphed morally.

🟢 Influential Mothers and Women

  • Rebekah: used cunning to secure Jacob’s blessing — a morally problematic example with consequences.

  • Bathsheba (mother of Solomon): interceded in a way that showed Solomon’s wisdom in judgment.

🔵 Symbolic Figures:

  • The bride in Song of Songs (“I am dark but lovely”) is interpreted as a symbol of the Church of the Gentiles.

  • The Cushite woman (Moses’ wife) and other figures symbolize the inclusion of the nations in God’s plan.

  • Queen of Sheba symbolizes the nations coming to seek divine wisdom.

  • Mary and Martha: symbolize contemplative life and active service.

  • The barren woman of Isaiah 54 = symbol of the Gentile church that will be fruitful in faith.

🟣 Women Serving in the New Testament:

  • Phoebe: a deacon (or servant) praised by Paul (Romans 16).

  • Priscilla and Aquila: a married couple whose house served as a church and who worked with Paul.

  • Many other women labored and received acknowledgement for their ministry and service.

⚖️ Examples of Couples:

  • Abraham and Sarah: faithful before the Lord.

  • Manoah and his wife: righteous; gave birth to Samson after being barren.

  • Ahab and Jezebel: a wicked couple; both fell under God’s judgment.

  • Ananias and Sapphira: lied about money and were judged with death.

🔶 Closing Lessons:

  • The Bible offers many varied samples of men and women for our instruction.

  • True strength is not only physical or intellectual, but lies in faith, wisdom, and obedience to God.

  • What one sows is what one reaps: those who sow deceit reap trouble; those who sow faith reap blessing.
