In this lecture, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains the difference between the birth of Christ and the creation of Adam, responding to the question: “If Christ was born of a mother without a father, then wasn’t Adam also without father or mother?”
The Pope clarifies that there is a major difference between creation and birth. Adam was created from nothing—directly by God’s hand—without human origin or natural laws of birth. Christ, however, was born miraculously within the human framework, from the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, not through a man.
Thus, Adam was formed, not born, while Christ was born through a divine miracle that occurred within human nature. The virgin birth reveals God’s power and shows that Christ is the incarnate Son of God, entering the world in a manner fitting His holiness and divinity.
