Written Criticism – Is the Son younger than the Father?
In this lecture, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III corrects the misunderstanding that since Christ is “begotten of God,” He must therefore be younger than the Father, as a human son is younger than his father.
The Pope explains that this idea comes from a physical and temporal concept of birth, which does not apply to God. Just as light proceeds from the sun the moment it exists—with no time gap—so the Son is eternally begotten of the Father, without beginning or end.
He adds another example: heat proceeds from fire at the same instant the fire exists; there is no time difference between them. In the same way, the Son’s begetting from the Father is eternal and timeless, because God’s nature is beyond time and change.
Thus, “begotten” does not mean “having a beginning,” but expresses the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son. The Son is equal to the Father in essence, glory, and power—neither younger nor lesser.
