What motivates humans?

The Main Idea of the Lecture:
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the forces and motives that drive human behavior, explaining that a human being is not driven by a single factor, but by a complex set of influences such as the mind, emotions, desires, benefit, conscience, habits, and nature.
First: The Role of the Mind
The mind is one of the most important drivers, but it is not infallible, as it may be led by intelligence or foolishness. Its decisions are also influenced by knowledge, whether correct or incorrect. Therefore, one must verify sources of knowledge, as they may lead to truth or error.
Second: The Influence of Emotions
Emotions may control and guide the mind, whether love or hatred, causing a person to act بعيد from sound thinking.
Third: The Role of the Subconscious Mind
The internal storage of experiences and feelings affects human behavior unconsciously, and the subconscious may lead a person to automatic actions.
Fourth: Pleasure and Desire
Many people are driven by physical or psychological pleasure, such as pleasure of food, revenge, or pride. Desire may control the mind instead of being controlled by it, leading to deviation.
Fifth: Benefit and the Self
A person may act out of personal benefit or self-interest and ambition, even if this leads to wrong behaviors, which requires distinguishing between true and false benefit.
Sixth: The Conscience
The conscience is a righteous inner voice that guides a person toward good, but it may weaken or be neglected if not nourished spiritually.
Seventh: Habit and Nature
Habits are formed by repeated actions and may become controlling forces, while nature represents a person’s inner character and requires spiritual struggle to change.
The Spiritual and Educational Dimension:
A person is called to examine himself to understand what drives him, and to subject all these motives to proper spiritual guidance, so that the mind becomes enlightened, the conscience alive, and desire disciplined, leading the person in the way of God.
