What Is Our Work in Evangelism and Pastoral Care?

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III mentions the Lord Christ’s command to His disciples to teach and preach and to make disciples of all nations, and he shows how the Coptic Church historically was a missionary church that reached the word of faith to many countries. Evangelistic and pastoral work are interconnected: evangelism brings souls into faith, and pastoral care preserves and nurtures them spiritually.
Contemporary Challenges in Evangelism
There are many practical difficulties such as language and cultural differences, and the social and economic needs in mission lands. Real examples were mentioned in Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zaire…) and South America (Brazil) and Australia (Aboriginal peoples), where conditions vary and require special service, patience and sacrifices.
Methods of Work and Means
The Church establishes churches, social centers and vocational training and offers practical love (food, caring for children, health services). Mission work is not limited to priests only; doctors, teachers and social workers can be effective evangelists when they provide physical and spiritual service together.
Qualities of One Called to Evangelize
The evangelist or shepherd needs true love for people, readiness to learn the language and culture of others, adaptability, and patience to endure hard conditions. It is advised that those who go should not be heavily burdened by family responsibilities that prevent long-term commitment, because hard mission work requires dedication and sacrifices.
Distinction between Evangelism, Teaching and Pastoral Care
Evangelism aims to bring people into the Orthodox faith; teaching and pastoral care continue thereafter. Evangelism must not be a means to seek comfort or personal glory, but to plant seeds of faith and tend their fruit.
Tangible Fruits of the Ministry
Examples from visits showed the joy of people receiving churches, and giving food and gifts to children leaves an unforgettable impression. Practical service opens hearts and facilitates preaching the word of God.
Call for Participation and Preparation
The call is open to all who love evangelism; training and study about different peoples are encouraged before going to serve. The Church needs those who truly love evangelism, not those who seek it for positions or personal comfort.
Spiritual Conclusion
Work in evangelism and pastoral care is the Lord’s work and His command to us: to be witnesses to the ends of the earth, to sow seeds of faith, and to accompany souls with loving pastoral care, spiritual wisdom and patience.
