What is Law No. 462 of 1955?
This law stipulates that if Christian spouses differ in denomination or sect, Islamic law shall be applied to them.
This law was issued under special circumstances that the Church was going through:
The Church was divided, and the Holy Synod had ruled to depose Pope Yusab II and requested the government to issue a decision for this deposition.
So the government issued the decision along with the abolition of the denominational courts on the same day, for a Church divided against itself.
An article by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, published in Al-Keraza Magazine – Ninth Year – Issue Seventeen – dated April 28, 1978.
