Virtue, Part 3
Main idea of the lecture
The lecture revolves around the concept of virtue, its nature, its roots, the way to acquire it, and the necessity of linking it with God. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that virtue is not merely an external behavior, but an inner spiritual state that comes from a person’s relationship with God and his desire to be in His image and likeness.
Spiritual and educational points
1. The nature and roots of virtue
-
Virtue is purity, goodness, and inner strength, a level above the self and desires.
-
Its source is the mind, faith, and divine grace, and it is a gift from God.
-
Some virtues are innate, and others require struggle, and with training they become easier.
2. The unity and harmony of virtues
-
Virtues cannot exist separately; love, humility, and discernment enter every virtue.
-
Practicing one isolated virtue without the others may lead to error.
3. Using virtue at the right time
-
Certain actions like silence are not virtues in themselves; their value depends on their timing.
-
True virtue is knowing the right time for the right action, such as when to speak or be silent, or when to show gentleness or courage.
4. The spiritual dimension of virtue
-
Virtue is not a social or philosophical practice, but a fragrance of joy to the Lord, and an expression of obedience and love.
-
Any virtue without the love of God is not true virtue.
-
The goal of virtue is to make the person a true child of God in His likeness.
5. Virtue begins from the heart
-
External behavior alone does not constitute virtue; love for goodness must exist first in the heart.
-
God examines the heart and rewards even the love of virtue when action is not possible.
6. Continuous training in virtue
-
Reaching full virtue requires long practice and purification of the soul.
-
A person starts with what he can and gradually progresses until the inner and outer person become one.
7. Love of God as the foundation of all virtue
-
Love of God leads to loving His kingdom, His commandments, and the life of virtue.
-
A person keeps virtue to preserve the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and not grieve Him.
-
Returning to God brings joy to heaven.
