Virtue – Part 3

The lecture explains the meaning of virtue and its characteristics: that virtue is the purity of the soul and its elevation above the self and pleasures, and that it is an inner power sometimes born in a person and other times acquired by struggle and training. Virtues are interconnected and do not stand alone; love, humility and wisdom enter into every virtue.
Spiritual and moral dimension
Virtue is not merely social ethics or a good reputation, but a relationship with God: obedience and love for God, and a return to the divine image in which man was created. A virtue is not truly considered such unless it is directed by love of God. Virtue is a fragrance of joy to the Lord and a means to live as holy children of God.
Practical application and discernment
Virtue requires wisdom in discernment: knowing when to be silent and when to speak, when to be gentle and when to be brave, when to forgive and when to punish, when to be serious or to use a spirit of humor. Some virtues are neutral states (like silence) that can be used for good or evil depending on their function and timing.
From inward to outward
Virtue begins in the heart: loving virtue inwardly is more important than outward acts without love. The believer is asked to start with small steps if he cannot immediately reach the perfection of virtue, and to purify his heart and practice the virtues until they deepen in the soul.
Symbols and meanings
White garments and priestly rites symbolize the purity and virtue with which the servant approaches the altar of God. Virtue is also translated into spiritual joy and the keeping of the Holy Spirit in the heart.
Practical summary
What is required is that the foundation of life be the love of God: out of love for His kingdom, out of love for His commandments, out of love for virtue; so that virtuous living becomes a result of love for God, and the goal of virtue is union with God and preserving the divine spiritual image in us. Start with a step, persevere by training and prayer so that the outward life matches the inner condition of the heart.
