The Spirits, Part 2
1. Rejection of the Doctrine of Reincarnation
His Holiness explains that all books discussing reincarnation come from one common source and idea that contradicts the Christian faith. The Coptic Orthodox belief rejects the idea that the soul could inhabit another body, animal, or bird, since this opposes the doctrine of redemption and the truth that man was created in the image and likeness of God.
2. Affirmation of the Immortality of the Soul
The Pope clarifies that the soul is immortal and has life after death because man was created in the image of the eternal God. Immortality reveals God’s justice, rewarding those who suffered or were oppressed on earth, and gives meaning to human struggle and endurance.
3. Biblical Evidence
He cites many verses affirming that “it is appointed for man to die once, and after that the judgment,” refuting the idea of multiple lives. Scripture also teaches that Christ’s redemption fully paid for sin, so there is no need for another incarnation or further punishment.
4. Against the Idea of Repentance After Death
The Pope refutes the belief that there is a chance for repentance or faith after death, explaining that the time for repentance is during life on earth. After death comes judgment, not another opportunity to correct or change.
5. The Human Soul Is Not Material
He stresses that the soul is not energy or matter but an immaterial being, endowed with reason, conscience, and responsibility — all things absent in matter. He adds that souls do not “dissolve in light,” since saints and angels appear in light without vanishing in it.
6. Rejection of Superstitions
His Holiness rejects popular myths linking spirits with ghosts or darkness, encouraging believers to embrace the biblical and enlightened understanding of the soul instead of childish tales.
7. Immortality as a Source of Hope
He teaches that belief in immortality comforts the living, giving hope of reunion with loved ones in eternal life, and motivates a holy life because of the coming judgment, eternal reward, and punishment.
8. The Soul Is Created by God but Born in Man
He concludes that the soul was created by God from the beginning but is given to each person at birth. Thus, man is one unified being of body and soul joined together according to God’s will.
