The Priest as a Teacher

  1. The work of teaching is essential in the priest’s mission, for the Scripture says, “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, and people should seek the law from his mouth” (Mal. 2:7).
And the priest who teaches is loved by his people. They turn to him, consult him, and trust his opinion—especially when it is supported by verses from Scripture and the sayings and lives of the saints.
  2. The priest can teach through the pulpit, and also through books, pamphlets, writings, and all means of communication.
  3. He can teach in the session of confession and spiritual guidance.
  4. He also teaches during pastoral visits to the people, so that the word of God and examples of holiness are clear in the visit.
  5. He also teaches by his good example and the practical model of life he presents to people.
  6. The priest teaches in his ordinary conversations as well, indirectly, and in answering every question addressed to him. Anyone who speaks with him can take from the conversation a word of benefit.
