The Mother Sins

The Main Idea
The lecture discusses the concept of “mother sins,” which are the main sins that give birth to many other sins. If a person overcomes these root sins, they can overcome a large number of related sins.
Self-love as a Root of Sins
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that self-love is one of the most dangerous mother sins because it leads a person to many wrong behaviors such as pride, self-justification, self-defense, and interfering in others’ affairs.
A self-centered person easily falls into many sins because they always seek to satisfy themselves and put themselves before others.
Denial of Self is the Way to Salvation
The spiritual teaching confirms that salvation from this sin comes through self-denial, as the Lord Christ commanded. Instead of justifying oneself, one should blame and correct oneself, as this leads to repentance and true spiritual growth.
Results of Self-love
Self-love leads to:
- Envy and competition
- Conflicts with others
- Lack of contentment
- Psychological and spiritual exhaustion
It may also lead a person away from God and onto the path of destruction.
The Sin of Pride
Pride is also considered a mother sin, and it has many forms such as pride in thought, heart, or body.
It results in many sins such as arrogance, عدم tolerance of others, argumentation, disputes, and may even lead to division and heresy.
The Sin of Hatred
Hatred is another mother sin that produces:
- Judgment and gossip
- سوء suspicion
- Gloating
- Harm and conflict
It may even lead to violence and killing because it corrupts the heart and distances a person from God’s love.
The Correct Spiritual Path
His Holiness directs that spiritual life should be ordered as follows:
God first, then others, then the self.
When a person lives within God’s love, they find their true self in a sound spiritual way.
Spiritual Conclusion
True happiness lies in removing sin from its roots, not just treating its results.
Resisting mother sins such as self-love, pride, and hatred leads a person to a pure and stable life in God.
