The Inner Person

This lecture by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III focuses on the importance of the inner person in spiritual life, affirming that God does not look at outward appearances or spoken words alone, but at the heart and the inner depth from which all actions and worship flow.

First: The Difference Between the Outer Person and the Inner Person

His Holiness explains that a person may appear outwardly righteous in prayer, speech, and behavior, while inwardly being empty of repentance, reverence, or love. This division makes the person as if two individuals: one who speaks and appears, and another who is silent within and inactive.

Second: True Worship from Within

Acceptable worship before God is that which comes from the heart, not from the lips alone. Prayer, prostration, apology, and giving all lose their value if they are not rooted in inner humility and sincere love. God seeks those who worship Him in spirit and truth, meaning through the inner person.

Third: Biblical and Spiritual Examples

His Holiness cites examples such as the prayer of the tax collector, the word of the right-hand thief, and the prayer of Hannah the mother of Samuel, to show that few words spoken from the depths of the heart were stronger than many prayers without spirit. He also explains that hypocrisy is the work of the outer person, while sincerity is the fruit of the inner person.

Fourth: Service and Virtue from an Inner Perspective

True service is not based solely on outward activity, but on inner love for God and for people. Likewise, virtues are not acquired through words or appearances, but through the transformation of the heart from within. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are the true foundation for building the inner person.

Fifth: A Call to Care for the Inner Person

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III calls every person to care for their inner kingdom, because the Kingdom of God is within us. When the inner person is strengthened by the Holy Spirit, life is renewed day by day, and all outward works become sincere and acceptable before God.
