The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit
Main Idea of the Lecture
The lecture discusses the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the human being and the Church, starting from faith and baptism, through the holy anointing and the laying on of hands, and extending to service, prophecy, and daily spiritual life.
The Holy Spirit and the Holy Anointing
The believer’s relationship with the Holy Spirit begins through the holy anointing after baptism, through which a person becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit and fully dedicated to God. This anointing is not merely symbolic but a true indwelling of the Holy Spirit that sanctifies the person.
Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
The work of the Holy Spirit in a person is not automatic; it requires true response and fellowship. The more a person cooperates with the Holy Spirit, the more he grows in holiness, and his actions reveal the presence of God’s Spirit within him.
The Holy Spirit in the Holy Scripture
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Holy Spirit works in the prophets and speaks through them; therefore, prophecies are the words of God Himself. He also explains that the Holy Spirit may reveal future events using the past tense because God sees all times as present before Him.
The Holy Spirit and the Laying on of Hands
Church teaching emphasizes that the laying on of hands with proclamation is the apostolic means of granting the authority of service and priesthood. The Holy Spirit grants grace, but authority is given through the Church according to its apostolic order.
The Holy Spirit and Service
Even those who are filled with the Holy Spirit in their personal lives need church sending and the laying on of hands to serve officially. Service is not a personal initiative but a divine calling practiced within the Body of the Church.
The Spiritual Dimension
The lecture affirms that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of holiness and wisdom, who leads the believer in spiritual life and makes him a living witness to Christ through conduct and deeds, not words alone.
