The Heart and Its Spiritual Importance

This lecture by Pope Shenouda III explains that the heart is the essence of spiritual life and the foundation of the true relationship with God. Any worship, repentance, or virtue that does not come from the heart remains merely outward and lacks spiritual power.
First: The Heart as the Center of Spiritual Life
Spiritual life is not merely rituals or outward practices, but a deep life of the heart, in which the heart is united with God through sincere love. God looks not at appearances but at what is inside.
Second: The Heart as the Basis of Worship and Repentance
True worship is that which comes from the heart. Worship without the heart is not accepted by God. Likewise, repentance is not only confession by the tongue, but a true change of heart, replacing love of the world with love of God.
Third: The Heart as the Source of Thought and Speech
Thoughts flow from the heart, and speech expresses what fills the heart. If the heart is filled with love, love comes out; if it is filled with harshness, harshness appears. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Fourth: The Heart and Spiritual Victory
Victory over sin begins from within. When a person conquers inwardly in the heart, he conquers outwardly. Repeated falls happen because the heart has not yet changed.
Fifth: The Heart, the Mind, and the Will
The heart, the mind, and the will work together. Renewal of the mind leads to renewal of the heart, and renewal of the heart strengthens the will. Therefore, one must stay away from sources of corrupt thoughts and fill the mind with the Word of God.
Sixth: The Steadfast Heart
A steadfast, unshaken heart is the secret of spiritual strength. The martyrs triumphed because their hearts were firm in faith. A hesitant or weak heart leads to spiritual downfall.
Seventh: How to Strengthen the Heart
The heart is strengthened by the love of God, deep faith, continuous prayer, and the work of grace. A person must open his heart to God and guard it from hardness and lukewarmness, so as not to lose the first love.
