🕊 The Spiritual Meaning of the Great Lent

His Holiness Pope Shenouda begins by greeting the faithful for the start of the Great Lent, explaining that it is called “Great” because it is the longest fast, and also because it holds great spiritual value, including the Holy Forty Days and Holy Week. Yet he stresses that fasting is not only about changing food, but a sacred time for spiritual growth and renewal in one’s relationship with God.

✝️ A Call to Repentance and Change

Pope Shenouda emphasizes that Lent should be a true period of repentance. Repentance is not only leaving sin, but changing for the better and growing spiritually. He warns that those who feel spiritually satisfied stop growing, while Lent is a divine invitation to renew the heart and break spiritual routine that makes worship empty and lifeless.

🔥 The Visitation of Grace and God’s Work in the Soul

He speaks about “visitations of grace” — those moments when a person feels a deep desire for repentance or is moved by the Word of God. God knocks at the door of the heart, waiting for man’s response. Thus, every believer should seize these moments to start anew, for God is always ready to begin with him and strengthen him through His grace.

🌿 Continuous Spiritual Growth

Pope Shenouda uses the example of a tree that grows day by day to illustrate that spiritual life must always be growing. Whoever does not grow becomes lukewarm; lukewarmness leads to falling, and falling may lead to destruction. Therefore, growth in goodness, in relationship with God, and in service is the mark of true spiritual life.

🙏 How to Begin Lent the Right Way

His Holiness calls believers to sit with themselves at the start of Lent and examine their lives: what must change? what sins need repentance? what habits must be broken? God is ready to forgive the entire past if a person begins a new, sincere start.

Main Message:
The Great Lent is a sacred time for repentance and spiritual growth, in which God invites every person to renewal and holiness, offering His grace to help each one begin anew.
