The Church Is the House of God

This lecture explains the concept of the Church in the Coptic Orthodox faith, not only as a building, but as the House of God, the place of His presence, a place of reverence and holiness, a symbol of heaven, the community of believers, and the temple of God dwelling in the human person.
Spiritual and Educational Themes
1. The Church as the House of God and House of Prayer
The Church is called the House of God and the House of Prayer, a place of God’s presence, as testified by the Holy Scripture, and therefore it must be treated with reverence and respect.
2. The Church as the House of Angels
Angels fill the Church and share worship with the believers, making the Church a true heavenly fellowship.
3. Reverence and Sanctity of the Church
The Church is a holy place, where speaking, quarrelling, or any behavior lacking reverence is not acceptable, because it is the “gate of heaven.”
4. Architectural and Liturgical Symbols
The design of the Church (domes, lights, altar, orientation toward the East) carries deep spiritual meanings, symbolizing heaven, divine light, and Christ the Sun of Righteousness.
5. The Church and Salvation
The Church is likened to Noah’s Ark, which saves souls from destruction, and within it is the altar upon which the divine sacrifice is offered.
6. The Sanctuary and the Altar
The sanctuary is the holiest place in the Church, entered only by the servants of the altar with preparation and reverence, and the altar is the center of worship and sanctification.
7. The Church as the Community of Believers
The Church is not only the building, but the community of believers, one body whose head is Christ, and every believer is a small church and a temple of the Holy Spirit.
8. The Church Through the Ages
The Church passed through three stages: natural law, written law, and the Age of Grace, and it is divided into the Church Militant on earth and the Church Triumphant in heaven.
