The Attributes of God – The Wisdom of God

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about one of the most glorious attributes of God—Wisdom—noting that people often praise it saying, “Your wisdom, O Lord.” The Son in the Holy Trinity is the Hypostasis of Wisdom, as written: “Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24).
Manifestations of God’s Wisdom in Creation
God made everything with wisdom since the beginning. He created plants before animals, animals before humans, and water before grass, preparing each for the next. In every detail—the brain, conscience, genes, and chromosomes—His divine order is revealed.
Diversity in Creation
By His wisdom, God made diversity among beings: spiritual angels, material creatures, and humans combining both. He made variety in color, mind, and temperament so that people complement each other and live in harmony rather than monotony.
God’s Wisdom in Nature and Human Order
God arranged the laws of nature—wind, pressure, and rain—with marvelous wisdom. Likewise, He ordered human society with different roles and responsibilities so that all may function in balance and unity.
The Wisdom of God in Redemption and Incarnation
God’s supreme wisdom shone in salvation, where justice and mercy met on the Cross. Christ was incarnate without sin to offer an infinite atonement for all humanity—an unfathomable plan beyond human understanding.
Trials and Suffering Under God’s Wisdom
God allows suffering and trials for human benefit: to strengthen faith, purify the heart, and teach humility. As with David the Prophet, whose struggles matured his spirit and produced the Psalms we pray. Even illness has wisdom—it reveals hidden flaws and leads to healing of body and soul.
God’s Wisdom in Death and Eternity
In His wisdom, God made death a passage from the temporal world to eternity, ensuring the continuation of life on earth and calling people to repentance and readiness for the Kingdom.
Judgment in God’s Wisdom
God’s final judgment will be just and wise—not the same for all, but according to each person’s knowledge and circumstances. To whom much is given, much will be required.
Fruits of Believing in God’s Wisdom
He who believes in God’s wisdom trusts His plan, lives in peace, and submits his life to Him. Faith in divine wisdom brings humility and prevents complaint. Thus we ask for the “wisdom from above,” as Solomon did, that we may live in God’s image and likeness.
