The Attributes of God – The Good

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the goodness of God — the divine quality that shines in all His dealings with humanity and creation. God’s goodness is a blend of love, gentleness, and mercy flowing from His nature, bringing peace and hope to the human heart.
1. God’s goodness in His relationship with humans:
God did not wish to terrify people by His divinity but lovingly humbled Himself to speak with them as a father to his children. He removed the barrier of fear so that humanity could speak to Him freely and lovingly, as St. Anthony the Great said: “I do not fear God because I love Him, and love casts out fear.”
2. God’s goodness in creation and giving:
Out of His goodness, God did not want to be alone; He created humankind and all creation in love. He prepared everything before making humans — the earth, the waters, the air, the plants, food, and dwelling. Even animals and nature were given what they need to live in comfort and beauty.
3. God’s generosity in His gifts:
God gives generously and without reproach. He granted humanity His image and likeness, authority over creation, and many talents — reason, beauty, strength, wealth, and freedom — even though some misuse them. He gave His Holy Spirit, made us His children, friends, and even the brothers of Christ.
4. God’s forgiveness and patience:
God does not desire the death of a sinner but that they return and live. He opened the gates of repentance and forgiveness, pardoned sinners like David, Augustine, Mary of Egypt, and St. Moses the Black. He is the One who says, “Your sins I will remember no more.”
Even to the adulterous woman, He said, “Neither do I condemn you; go in peace.”
5. God’s endurance and forbearance:
God patiently endures sinners, blasphemers, and unbelievers, shining His sun upon both the just and the unjust. His kindness knows no bounds. Even toward Satan, He showed patience, not destroying him immediately but allowing freedom of choice.
6. God’s protection and care:
God guards His people from all evil and walks with them, as He said to Jacob: “I am with you, and I will keep you, and will bring you back to this land.” He cares even for the smallest and weakest and blesses all creation through His mercy.
Spiritual message:
The goodness of God calls us to be good, gentle, merciful, and loving toward all. Whoever contemplates God’s kindness feels the warmth of His love and is moved to live in gratitude, repentance, and hope.
