The Attributes of God – The Creator

God as the Creator from nothing
His Holiness Pope Shenouda distinguishes between a “creator” and a “maker,” explaining that a maker uses existing material to form something, while God the Creator brings existence out of nothing — a clear proof of His divinity, for none but God can truly be called Creator.
God’s power and wisdom in creation
He explains that God created the universe in precise order and wonderful beauty. Everything was made with wisdom and not randomly — matter first, then life and form — all reflecting divine harmony and purpose.
The meaning of the six days of creation
He clarifies that the “six days of creation” are not literal solar days, since the sun was created on the fourth day, but rather long or short periods symbolizing the stages of creation, expressed by “and there was evening and morning.”
The greatness of the universe and the precision of its order
Pope Shenouda marvels at the heavens, stars, and galaxies as clear evidence of God’s limitless power, for such constant order since the beginning of time could only result from divine design.
The mysteries of Earth and creation
He speaks of the hidden wonders of the Earth — its minerals, oceans, and underground waters — affirming that even with all scientific progress, humanity knows only a fraction of the secrets of God’s creation.
The human being as a microcosm
He describes the human as a “small universe” full of mysteries — the brain, heart, nerves, organs, soul, and spirit — each part testifying to the Creator’s wisdom and power.
The diversity of creatures and God’s justice
He notes that God made all creatures — from lions to worms — with justice and compassion, giving each the means to live and survive, such as the deer’s swiftness to escape the lion, showing divine mercy and fairness.
Continuous creation and divine care
He concludes that God’s act of creation continues; every birth and new life is part of His ongoing creative work. God knows, sustains, and governs all His creatures with perfect wisdom. All creation is truly “the work of His hands,” and everything in it glorifies Him.
