1. God’s compassionate love

His Holiness speaks of one of God’s most beautiful attributes—mercy and compassion. God is not only almighty but tenderhearted, full of sympathy for His creation. His mercy extends to all humans, animals, and even the earth itself.

2. Christ’s compassion in His ministry

The Pope explains that Christ’s miracles were not just displays of divine power but acts of mercy. He raised the widow’s son out of compassion, healed the blind and lepers, and cared for the multitudes as a loving shepherd.

3. God’s mercy in His commandments

God’s commandments are not heavy because He doesn’t wish to burden His children. He gives both the command and the grace to fulfill it. The Holy Spirit works within believers, teaching, reminding, and guiding them on the spiritual path.

4. The Good Shepherd

In His tenderness, God watches over His children and provides for their needs. As He told Jacob, “I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Even without prayer, God knows what we need and gives beyond what we ask.

5. God’s mercy toward all creation

God’s compassion extends even to animals—He commanded rest for them on the Sabbath and care for their well-being. Scripture says not even a sparrow falls without the Father’s knowledge, showing His deep care for all living things.

6. Mercy in trials

God never allows anyone to be tempted beyond their strength; He provides a way out. He permits pain but heals through grace. He gave Job endurance, closed the lions’ mouths for Daniel, and walked with the three youths in the furnace. Truly, “He wounds and binds up.”

7. Mercy toward sinners

Christ’s mercy shines through in His forgiveness of sinners—the adulterous woman, Zacchaeus the tax collector, and the prodigal son. God’s door of repentance remains open; He Himself seeks the lost to bring them home.

8. The Cross—ultimate mercy

The greatest act of divine compassion was Christ’s carrying of the sins of all humanity. Yet divine mercy is not indulgence—it is rescue. God disciplines those He loves; even His correction is mercy meant for salvation.

9. He wounds and heals

The Pope concludes that God may allow pain to bring greater blessing, as with Joseph, Jonah, Moses, and Ruth. He never abandons His children but transforms wounds into healing, saying: “Faithful are the wounds of a loving friend.”
