The Apostolic Fathers and Saints

🕊 Lecture Summary
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the Holy Apostles, affirming that they are the foundation of the faith that reached us, and without them, we would not be Christians. The Church is built on the foundation of the apostles, and Christ is the chief cornerstone.
1. The Importance of the Apostles in the Church’s Foundation
The apostles received the faith from the Lord and handed it to their disciples; therefore, we call the ancient churches “Apostolic Churches,” such as Alexandria, Antioch, Rome, and Jerusalem. They transmitted the pure teaching and priesthood that continues from Christ until today.
2. Apostolic Faith and Priesthood
The apostles received priesthood directly from Christ’s hands, and this apostolic line continues unbroken through generations. Faith, teaching, and priesthood are all truly apostolic.
3. Their Divine Calling
Christ personally chose them, knowing their hearts and readiness. Even St. Paul received his unique calling from the Lord, being called by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — becoming a model of zeal, service, and struggle.
4. Virtues of the Apostles
Their lives were marked by obedience and discipleship to Christ for more than three years, then by the fullness of the Holy Spirit. They became powerful in faith, preaching, and miracles — even their prayers shook places. They showed courage and steadfastness amid persecution and imprisonment.
5. Their Ministry and Mission
They traveled the whole world preaching with the power of the Holy Spirit, from Jerusalem to Rome, India, and Egypt, founding many churches. Their ministry was accompanied by miracles, healing, and raising the dead.
6. Sufferings and Endurance
They endured tribulations joyfully, considering them external and unable to touch their hearts, believing that nothing could separate them from the love of Christ. Their souls were strong, fearless, and unwavering.
7. Spiritual Life and Character
They were humble yet strong, combining gentleness with firmness, mercy with discipline. Their example teaches that true love goes hand in hand with courage, and holiness with spiritual strength.
8. Lessons for Us
We must imitate the apostles in zeal, service, and steadfast faith, holding firmly to their apostolic tradition in teaching and worship, to be true children walking in their path and blessed by their intercession.
