The Main Idea of the Lecture

The lecture speaks about the nature of angels as presented by the Holy Bible and the church teaching, explaining who the angels are, how God created them, their ranks and works, and the spiritual virtues that characterize them, while clarifying the difference between the fallen angels (demons) and the holy angels.

The Nature and Creation of Angels

Angels are spiritual beings created by God, and they are spirits invisible to the human eye. They were created from the beginning of creation within the heavenly creation, and their number is unlimited and cannot be counted, as church tradition indicates that they are thousands and myriads beyond number.

The Ranks of Angels and Their Order

Angels have multiple ranks in heaven such as the cherubim, seraphim, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, and each rank has its role in the heavenly order. There are archangels, among whom are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and Michael is considered the general leader of the heavenly hosts.

The Fall of Satan

The teaching explains that God did not create a devil, but He created a good angel who fell because of pride and disobedience. He desired to rise and become like God, so he fell from his glory and drew with him a number of angels who became demons opposing God and fighting humanity.

The Virtues of Angels

Angels are characterized by many virtues, the most important of which is complete obedience to God. They carry out His will immediately upon hearing His word without argument or hesitation. They are also characterized by holiness, purity, spiritual beauty, and great power, and their beauty appears as light and radiance.

The Power of Angels and Their Service

Angels possess great power, as they are able to execute God’s commands in the universe, whether in protection, discipline, or declaring divine messages. They may be sent for rescue, for annunciation, for guarding, or for carrying out divine judgment.

The Works of Angels

Among the works of angels are continual praise to God, serving human beings according to God’s will, delivering divine messages, and carrying the prayers of the saints to God. They also accompany the righteous and lead them to eternal rest, and they will participate in the events of the Second Coming and in the process of judgment.

Angels in the Life of the Church

Angels occupy a clear place in the life of the Church and its prayers, where they are mentioned in praises, liturgies, and church feasts. The Church also asks for the help and protection of angels and affirms that believers live surrounded by the camps of angels who serve according to the will of God.
