Terms in the Holy Bible – The Church

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the word Church appears in the Holy Bible in three major meanings, and each should be understood according to its context.
✨ First: The Church as a Building
-
In Acts 9:31: “The churches… were being built,” clearly referring to physical structures built for worship.
-
In 1 Corinthians 11:18: “When you gather in the church,” meaning the place designated for prayer and assembly.
-
This meaning appears in passages that describe the church as a physical meeting place.
✨ Second: The Church as the Community of Believers
-
In Acts 2:47: “The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved,” meaning He added people to the community of believers.
-
In Matthew 16: “I will build My Church,” meaning the community of the faithful.
-
The persecution in Acts 8:1 was against the Church—the believers, not buildings.
-
In Acts 12:5: “Prayer was made earnestly by the church,” meaning by the group of believers.
This meaning also includes the Church as the Body of Christ, as in Ephesians 5, where Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her, meaning the people who believe in Him.
✨ Third: The Church as the Clergy
-
In Matthew 18: “If he does not listen, tell it to the church,” meaning the ecclesiastical leadership, not the whole congregation, since disputes cannot be presented to all the believers but to those in spiritual authority.
🌿 Spiritual Message
Understanding the meanings of the word Church helps the believer recognize its depth: it is not only a building, but the community redeemed by Christ, and the spiritual leadership that guides and shepherds. The Church is God’s house, His people, and His body, where the believer receives grace, communion, and a sanctified spiritual life.
