Seminar on the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity at the Monastery of Anba Bishoy – Wadi El Natrun

The lecture explains the doctrine of the Holy Trinity as a core belief in the Coptic Orthodox Church, clarifying that the Trinity was not invented by the Council of Nicaea but is a divine truth revealed since the Old Testament and manifested in the New, especially in the Baptism of Christ where the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit appeared together.
1. The Trinity in the Bible
The holiness explains that the Trinity existed from the beginning:
-
In Genesis: “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” — a reference to the Holy Spirit.
-
In the New Testament: The Trinity appears in the baptism of Christ — the Father speaks from heaven, the Son is baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends as a dove.
2. Understanding the “Son” and the “Logos”
His Holiness explains that the “Son” is the rational Word of God, and the phrase “In the beginning was the Word” means the Son is God’s rational expression or Logos through whom the world was created. God created the world by His rational Word and His life-giving Spirit.
Thus, the Trinity is:
-
The Father: the Divine Essence.
-
The Son: the Rational Mind of God.
-
The Holy Spirit: the Divine Spirit of Life.
3. Analogies for better understanding
The Trinity is reflected in man created in God’s image: self, mind, and spirit.
Also, it resembles fire producing heat and light but remaining one essence — showing unity without division.
4. Difference between Christian and pagan trinities
The Christian Trinity is one in essence and nature, while pagan trinities (like Isis, Osiris, and Horus) are three separate gods with bodily procreation. Christianity completely rejects such ideas. The divine generation is eternal and spiritual, not physical.
5. Eternal generation of the Son
The Son is eternally begotten of the Father — like thought from mind — without separation. Therefore, the Son is co-eternal with the Father, equal in divinity and one in essence.
6. Unity of the Persons
Christ said: “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three gods but one God in three Persons, sharing one will and one power.
The Father creates, the Son reveals, and the Holy Spirit sanctifies.
7. Refuting misconceptions
The Church rejects any confusion of the Christian Trinity with pagan polytheism or the Islamic misunderstanding that includes Mary as part of the Trinity. The Christian Trinity is divine unity without physical or human generation.
8. The spiritual dimension
Belief in the Trinity leads believers into a living relationship with God: worshiping the Father as loving, uniting with the Son in the sacraments, and being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
It is the mystery of divine unity revealed in creation, redemption, and eternal life.
