🔹 Main Idea:
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III teaches that self-examination is the path to repentance and holiness. A true believer must daily test his thoughts, words, and actions before God, not to despair, but to purify his heart and grow in grace.

🔸 1. Types of Self-Examination

  • Annual or periodic reflection.

  • Before confession or communion.

  • Daily review before sleep.

  • Best of all: self-control before acting or speaking.

🔸 2. True Spiritual Standards

We must measure ourselves not by people’s customs but by God’s commandments, just as a patient tests his health by medical truth, not by appearance.

🔸 3. Examples of the Saints

St. Arsenius examined himself daily. St. Augustine confessed even his earliest sins. The saints show that constant repentance keeps the heart alive.

🔸 4. Negative and Positive Examination

Negative: recognizing sins.
Positive: seeing what virtues and fruits of the Spirit we lack—love, joy, peace, meekness, humility.

🔸 5. Condemn, Do Not Excuse Yourself

True repentance comes when one blames himself instead of defending. “Judge yourself before you are judged,” said St. Macarius the Great.

🔸 6. Beware of Satan’s Deception

The devil tempts us to excuse ourselves, saying “your intentions were good” or “Christ already forgave you.” Yet the Church teaches that remembering our sins humbly brings forgiveness.

🔸 7. Reject False Excuses

Do not justify sin by circumstances or fear. God rejected the excuses of Adam, Abraham, Elijah, and Moses because He gives strength, not escape.

🔸 8. The Power of Will

Grace strengthens those who truly wish to change. Weakness is not an excuse; the Holy Spirit helps every sincere soul.

🔸 9. The Goal: Repentance and Renewal

Self-examination is not self-punishment but awakening. It leads to repentance, forgiveness, and renewal in Christ.

🔸 10. Final Exhortation

“Examine yourself truthfully and strictly. Do not justify or pamper your soul. If you fall, rise again, for grace is active, the Holy Spirit works, and the way of holiness is open to all who desire it.”
