Saul and the Summoning of Samuel’s Spirit

The lecture discusses a difficult issue in interpreting the Holy Bible, which is the incident of King Saul going to the witch of Endor to ask for the summoning of the spirit of the prophet Samuel. Pope Shenouda III examines this incident from a theological and spiritual perspective, trying to understand whether the one who appeared was truly Samuel or another spirit that deceived Saul.
First: God’s Rejection of Summoning Spirits
Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that God in the Law completely forbade the summoning of spirits and considered it an abomination and impurity. Because of this practice, God punished other nations and drove them out from before His people. Therefore, dealing with sorcerers and mediums is divinely rejected and is considered a serious sin.
Second: The Limits of Satan’s Authority
Pope Shenouda III explains that Satan has no authority over the spirits of saints or prophets. Satan may have power over evil spirits that belong to him, but he cannot control the spirits of the righteous who possess a higher spiritual rank.
Third: The Difficulty of Summoning a Prophet’s Spirit
The lecture raises several questions:
- How can a medium who works with demons summon the spirit of a great prophet like Samuel?
- Can Satan subject a holy spirit?
- And how would God allow something that He Himself forbade in the Law?
These questions raise doubts about whether the appearing spirit was truly Samuel.
Fourth: Different Interpretations of the Incident
Pope Shenouda III presents three main opinions:
- That the one who appeared was not Samuel but an evil spirit that took his form to deceive Saul.
- That Samuel actually appeared.
- That Samuel appeared by God’s will and not by the medium, in order to rebuke Saul and warn him of his end.
He then discusses these opinions and presents the difficulties of accepting some of them.
Fifth: Evidence Suggesting It Was Not Samuel
Pope Shenouda III mentions several observations:
- The medium did not call Samuel by name during the summoning.
- The appearing figure did not say that he was Samuel.
- Saul himself did not see the figure but believed the medium’s words.
- The medium herself became frightened when she saw what appeared.
All of this opens the possibility that what happened was a demonic deception.
The Spiritual Message of the Lecture
The lecture stresses the need for caution regarding everything related to magic and spirit summoning. It also emphasizes the importance of spiritual discernment and not believing every spiritual claim, but rather testing the spirits to know whether they are from God.
